iPod Touch 5 – A Bigger, Faster, Brighter iPod With A Beautiful Design

Apple’s iPod touch 5 is a perfect substitute for a 4” iPhone and can do everything except making cellular calls. The 5th generation iPod offers you the 1136x640 Retina display of iPhone 5 with the internals of iPhone 4S. While the combo is not bad at all, there is always a generation gap between the iPod touch and the iPhone as far as CPU and GPU are concerned. Still, the iPod touch 5 is a bigger, faster, and brighter device compared to its predecessor. Let’s have a detailed iPod Touch 5 review, starting with its beautiful design.

Design

The colored iPod Touch 5 looks pretty different from the previous model, featuring a fingerprint-resistant aluminum back to replace the old metallic one. A rubber pad towards the top right on its rear covers the WiFi antenna, while its flat back offers obvious benefits compared to the old tapered-edge design. The volume and sleep/wake buttons are now located on the flat edge, making them more accessible than before.

It is 12mm taller and a millimeter thinner compared to its predecessor. So, you can now enjoy a larger screen and use a number of Apps and Web pages designed to take advantage of the bigger screen size.

It now uses a more versatile Lightning connector instead of a 30-pin Dock connector. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack at its bottom.

Display

The display on iPod Touch 5 is stretched to 4” from 3.5” screens in older models. Quite surprisingly, Apple didn’t widen the device to achieve this, rather it skewed the aspect ratio to replicate a more widescreen look. The bezel has been redesigned to reduce the extra phone length as well.

It is an IPS display, similar to the one in iPhone 5. It uses 1136x640px screen with 326dpi pixel density. A slight drawback to this screen is that it doesn’t offer automatic brightness settings. You can only adjust brightness manually from the settings menu.

Camera

Apple did some serious upgrades to the cameras of iPod Touch 5, offering a 5MP main camera of iPhone 4 to allow for 1080p video recording, HDR, and panorama mode in photos. On the front, it uses a 1.2MP FaceTime camera to match the photo quality of the newer iPhones. It also renders relatively sharp and bright videos.

Performance

The iPod Touch 5 really feels nippy, and its responsiveness sets it apart from many different Android devices. The real differentiator is the App Store, however, as it always seems to offer a bit better apps.

Its snappy processing comes from a dual-core 1GHz A5 processor, the same that comes in iPhone 4S. It can handle games perfectly and give you almost console-quality visuals. In everyday use, it doesn’t show any lags and runs super-quick.

Battery Life

According to Apple’s claims, the iPod Touch 5 offers 40 hours of music playback and 8 hours of video playback. Realistically, if you want to get 8 hours of playback with videos, we’d recommend that you set the display brightness to under 50%. As usual, the device doesn’t come with a charger included in the package. So, you will have to charge it over USB.
