With Blackberry PRIV, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer finally decided to land into the world of Android smartphones. And, it didn’t really come as a surprise because there were rumors about PRIV for quite a few months and it was referred to as Venice – the codename. Overall, in our Blackberry PRIV review, this shift to the Android platform made sense and the manufacturer did a pretty good job at it too. The older Blackberry 10 didn’t come with all the top-of-the-line apps, and the change was pretty much on the cards. Let’s run you through some specs and features of this smartphone.
Design
Blackberry PRIV brings something a bit different to Android users. If you have always loved the slider phones and want something that pops open and close with satisfying action and sound, this phone brings you both. The design features a little metal ridge somewhere around its bottom, between the front-facing speaker and the screen glass, so that you can get the thumb underneath and push the phone up for revealing the keyboard. You can hold it in one hand and perform all the basic tasks without much hassle.
As for the screen, it comes with dual-curved sides, similar to Galaxy S7 Edge. However, the edges aren’t too pronounced as in the case of Samsung’s phones. Still, it looks quite eye-catching. There’s a metal rim around its glass front. It is raised a little towards the top and the bottom for protecting the screen while your phone is face-down. It also lends a premium feel to the smartphone.
Display
Blackberry PRIV comes with a more conventional type of screen that is 5.4” in size and is a QHD dual-curved display. The edges slope gently to give it a snug fit into your hand while lending it an impressive look as it gets illuminated.
As for the resolution, the PRIV comes with a 2560x1440 display which is pretty much in line with most of the newer devices including HTC 10 and Galaxy S7. The 540 ppi pixel density makes the display sharp as ever. The display uses AMOLED technology for ensuring vibrant, bright colors.
Camera
The Blackberry PRIV comes with an 18mp rear camera and a 2mp front camera. It comes equipped with some high-end features like phase-detect autofocus and dual-color LED flash. The camera can also record 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 60fps.
Sometimes, you might get disappointed by the camera results, however. That’s because the lens may focus too quickly, but eventually, you get noisy images. You can’t also always rely on its automatic white balance.
Performance
The Blackberry PRIV comes equipped with a 64-bit, Snapdragon 808 hexa-core SoC from Qualcomm, and it won’t disappoint you at all. It is also equipped with 3GB RAM. For high-intensity tasks, the smartphone taps into its dual-core 1.8GHz CPU as well as a 1.44GHz quad-core CPU. They may be a bit slower but are quite energy efficient.
Battery Life
The phone comes with a 3410mAH non-removable battery. According to the manufacturer’s claim, it can last for around 22.5 hours with mixed usage. In practice, PRIV comes very close to the claimed figure.
